Learner Stories
Lita first heard about SJLE through a family member who had recently completed the Healthy Self-Esteem programming. Watching someone close to her grow confidence and self-worth sparks something in her.
At the time, Lita was going through a difficult chapter. She struggled to speak up for herself and felt the need to apologize for everything.
Throughout those challenging times, Lita always had a curiosity about psychology, how the brain worked, and understanding why people think the way they do. She knew she wanted something different for herself, and that is when she decided to enroll in the Healthy Self-Esteem program.
“I took an interest into it because I am very psychological. I love to learn about the brain, about how it all works and everything.”
Through the program, Lita learned about healthy relationships, personal boundaries, and the impact thoughts can have on everyday life, both positive and negative. With Lita’s great interest in psychology, learning about these topics resonated greatly with her, as this solidified that the brain truly does connect with your own self-worth. Shifting from a negative mindset to a positive one can support who you truly want to be. From completing the Healthy Self-Esteem Program, for the first time in a long time, she started to see herself in a different light.
When asked who she was before programming, she said, “Lita before was a shell. She didn’t know how to speak out as much. She said sorry for every little tiny mistake.”
After completing Healthy Self-Esteem, Lita continued on with the Grits & Goals program to build workplace and life skills. There, she learned how to accept and apply feedback in a positive way, communicate more effectively, and work positively within a group setting.
“Now, after the Self-Esteem program and Grits & Goals program that I did, I am now more outspoken and can respectfully know how to keep distance from people.”
Motivated to keep moving forward, Lita enrolled in the BEST program, where she graduated with her Adult High School Diploma.
Looking ahead, Lita plans to pursue post-secondary education in criminology with the goal of becoming a forensic psychiatrist, a career that combines her passion for psychology and helping others.
Today, Lita has a new perspective on herself and her future. She is confident, has discovered her voice, and knows she is far more capable than she once believed.
