Whether it's organizing your closets, paying off debt, going back to school, applying for a new job opportunity, taking control of your health, or learning to play an instrument, this quote rings true to all of us! We are all able to relate because once you take that leap, you only wish you had done so sooner.
A good friend once shared with me that she didn't make New Year’s resolutions in the traditional sense, but instead makes a list of new monthly commitments which will add to her life and the lives of others. For example, she will commit to donating clothing or books, help out at a seniors home, try a new sporting activity, etc... I've since adopted this tradition and look forward to the changes in my life from year to year! I encourage you to do the same this year. Perhaps the Saint John Learning Exchange can be of assistance to you or someone you know in meeting your/their educational or employment goals for 2015.
When approached a few years ago to get involved with the Learning Exchange as a board member, I felt it was a good fit for me as an educator who sees education as empowerment and therefore an important poverty reduction initiative. At the time, I had very little knowledge of the variety of programs offered. I am continually amazed by the amount of change this small but growing organization and its community partners affect in the lives of so many citizens in Saint John. Quite honestly, I need my handbook nearby when discussing the various programs offered because there are so many terrific initiatives going on at The Learning Exchange. The programs are far more varied than adult literacy and preparation for obtaining a GED. Other aspects include support for developing the skills required to be successful in the workplace, coaching throughout the job search process, and preparation for postsecondary opportunities. Because everyone is entering the program with a unique life experience, there is a focus on self development and individualized programming.
I am so pleased that there is a supportive environment like the Saint John Learning Exchange for adults in our city looking to make a change and better their lives. This is an incredible resource in our city. I encourage you to share this resource with someone you know who is looking to improve their education or employment opportunities this New Year.
For those setting goals, it's true that any day is a great day to start something new, but New Year's is the ultimate opportunity to make a positive change. Make a different kind of New Year's resolution this year! If you wait, a year from now you'll wish you had started today! If you're interested in the programming, getting involved with the Exchange or in hearing about the successful stories via newsletter, email SJLE .
Happy New Year to you all!
